Have you finished your shopping yet? If not, may I make a suggestion?
I’m a big believer in the fact that stuff clutters our homes and as a result our lives. And so on a day like Christmas, known far and wide for stuff giving and stuff getting, it’s hard to know what to give to those we love that won’t lead us down the path of over accumulation. In the Queendom, we attempt to give as much presence as possible instead of presents. What I mean by that is that we love to give experiences (or gifts that foster experiences) which bring us closer as a family (and keep me from throwing random large plastic items out into the yard much to the chagrin of my children). On my Christmas wish list this year in keeping with this principle? A Family Membership to Conner Prairie – one of our family’s favorite places to learn about Indianapolis History and pioneer history in general.
A short drive from downtown Indianapolis, Conner Prairie makes history come alive for people of all ages (seriously, from your barely walking toddler to your great granny, everyone will love this place). A membership to this amazing experience is as little as $65 for the family for
the entire year! For less than you’d spend on an iPod, much less than a Wii, and certainly less than a new TV you can give your family a gift that brings great joy and togetherness all year long. And right now, you also get a free gift with purchase of a membership. Free is good people.
We were recently blessed with the chance to take the Eldest Princess to Christmas by Candlelight on the Prairie and it was AWESOME. We spent two hours exploring what Christ
mas was like for folks over 150 years ago. The Eldest Princess was appalled to learn that kids had to go to school on Christmas Day! And even the history geek that I am learned about the Christmas tradition of Belsnickel (Google it). Plus we got to see the AMAZINGGingerbread Houses on display right now as a part of the Gingerbread Village. Beyond words people. Go and see those tasty creations until January 3rd for the low price of $5/person. SO cool.
As you can tell, I get pretty excited about Conner Prairie. Give a gift of membership this year (or ask for one from Grandma and Grandpa). Your living room will be less cluttered and your life much fuller.
