I bought the Garmin Travel Guide for France to use with a Garmin Nuvi 370 GPS (see my separate review) on a trip to Brittany and Paris. After spending $550 on the GPS (price has gone down since then – don’t you hate that?), I decided another $65 for the Travel Guide was worth a go. I wish I had saved my money.

The Travel Guide is a memory card that is inserted into the GPS to access its database. The GPS reads the information directly from the card. This means that the data contained cannot be updated. I could never find out how old the information contained by the card was. I called Garmin before my purchase and the rep couldn’t tell me, and neither the card nor the packaging says (at least with Rick Steves or Fodor’s, it’s clear what year the book was printed). Also, because it seems a couple of people have misunderstood what this product is, let me say that the guide contains points of interest only; it does not contain any maps of France. Those would need to be purchased separately. This is why I bought a 370 – European maps were pre-loaded.

I found the listings for Brittany to be sparse; Paris was more complete, but the problem there was that the GPS did not perform well on foot in the city.

The biggest issue I had was that the Travel Guide database didn’t integrate well with the Garmin’s self-contained database. I often found myself going back and forth between the two to review or find listings. I couldn’t see both at the same time. For that reason alone, I didn’t find myself using it very much.

Given this, and the fact that it costs as much as 3 hard-copy travel guides, I do not recommend this product.

So if you do plan to take your GPS to Europe, instead of purchasing one of these, I would recommend that you input the sites, stores, museums, etc. that you’re interested in into the Favorites section of the GPS. It’s time consuming, but then when you’re driving or walking around, it’s easy to go to the list and see that you’re right around the corner from that gallery you wanted to visit, or that the restaurant recommended by the travel magazine is right next to the doll museum that your wife wanted to see. It became an easy and efficient way to plan out a route.

I cannot imagine this product being sold. There is absolutely NO value to this. It is the equivalent to the worst travel book you could encounter. It lists restaurants, sights and museums along with their address and of course something equally important, phone numbers. There are NO maps or directions to the destinations and therefor serves no purpose whatever. Had I not misplaced my receipt I would have demanded a refund on my return.

It is the points of interest only and NO MAPS, it was almost useless to me.
